Description

Mission accomplished!! I have been looking for this image for at least 5 years.
I’ve been searching through files repeatedly, and finally remembered I stuck some images on CD’s when I was deciding how to store things.

Technical Details

Lots of updating , since it was quite noisy.
Enlarged with Gigapixel 8, run-through DxO Pure Raw and touched up with Topaz.
The old D1X, I’m pretty sure. No idea about the settings, since it’s so old. I remember I took a whole lot of shots, hoping for the best.

Sandy,

That is a wild photograph. I can clearly see the eagle. Even stars?!, on a D1x? Man that was a long time ago. Did the D1x have good noise profile? I have a D2x and anything above ISO 400 is basically junk.

In any case, it’s a great photo.

Hi, Youssef -

I honestly don’t remember. I suppose I thought the noise control was ok, since this was about my first foray into a real pro camera and I had nothing to compare it to. Topaz’s NR even back then was not great, but ok for then - incredibly improved by now, of course, and some of my old stuff is worth a rejuvenation.
THIS file was pretty bad, and I was fairly happy with DxO’s “Rescue”. This was actually pretty dull and with poor contrast originally.

That’s a crazy aurora! And a very nice capture for back then. So much improvement in recent years is due to better monitors.

This is just extraordinary Sandy. The green light is incredible in itself, but the shape of the “eagle” is amazing. Cool shot.
