What a cool combination, David. I love the juxtaposition of two such different birds, though oddly, both are fairly common on the prairies down here. To my eye, this looks as if you might have done the processing first and then the crop as the image has a slightly oversharpened/over contrasted look. I think with a large crop, it might work better to do the cropping first then control the detail second to fit the crop more appropriately (actually, I’ve never tried this myself, it just suddenly occurred to me looking at this image).

Hi David, nice to see these two in the frame together. As your title indicates, I doubt they are buds. Makes you wonder what each one is up to. I like the composition and subject placement. I agree with Dennis on image quality and sharpening - the big crop and processing is showing. Nice catch.
