The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I was experimenting with double exposure, and I liked how the maple tree’s branching pattern resembled the pattern in the crocus flowers.
Specific Feedback
This is the jpeg from the camera with no post-processing. Should I have done anything to the jpeg? Any suggestions about overall exposure and composition or impressions would be appreciated.
Technical Details
Have just started learning to use the in-camera multiple exposure, the first frame was of the maple tree looking up and the second were some crocus in the shade. I used additive option for the double exposure on aperture priority and spot metering. This is the jpeg from camera with no post processing. Any suggestions or impressions would be appreciated.

Very different look overall, Bill. I can’t say I’ve ever intentionally tried any double exposure work. Especially as I only photograph with film to this day. However, I could see with digital it’s kind of a “no harm no foul” experimentation.
With that all said I like the look here and I’m open minded about others personal ideas with the artistic approach.
Interesting experiment. I think you could add a bit of abstraction with some crop from the top and quite a bit from the bottom. The warm toned highlights in the top half aren’t adding anything for me – maybe darken highlights and desaturate there?
I have a lot more fun with double / multiple exposures by doing them in PS layers from raw files with manipulation and masking.
Thanks, I realize that there is more control by layering in PS rather than camera but I wanted to try. I will take a look at some cropping and bring the highlights down. Thanks for the suggestions.
Kudos for giving the in camera double exposure a whirl. I have never achieved anything keepable! So you’re way ahead of me.
Diane has mentioned the things that I would think about. It’s an intriguing image and worth the effort to rework. The colours and combination of the crocus, tree and the sky work very well, but I feel just in the wrong place.
Repeating Glenys… kudos for trying out the in-camera multiple exposure!
You mention just 2 exposures, but it actually looks like at least 3 exposures. The third I guess would be the clouds present, which I assume are also part of the tree image, thus only 2 exp. But the end effect is actually many images combined in to one.
To perhaps simplify, I could see a square crop either of the top, or the bottom - as an alternate view.
Sure, you could tame the highlights. And the beauty of these type images is that all the rules get tossed out. Saturation, exposure, contrast, all those things are fair game to exploit and experiment with.
Personally, I’ve been enjoying the in-camera, multiple exposure technique quite a bit the last year or more. AND… combining with ICM. It’s one thing to combine multiple “real” scenes ( clearly more challenging to find a good combo, which leads to those who might prefer to composite in PS), but once you start combining ICM abstracts in 2 or more exposures, things get pretty wild!
I’m still learning and experimenting with the different blending modes. I use mostly the Dark mode with the ICM me’s.
I think quite a successful first attempt and hope this excites you to continue to experiment!
Thanks, yes I do plan on some more experiments and I am going to try the square crop. I tried the dark option, but in this case, the tree trunks were darker and thus covered up the crocus; I think there are times when dark would work well.
