Description
I came across this image while scrolling through my catalog. It was shot on film, likely Ektachrome 200, somewhere in southern Africa, likely Mpumalanga or northern Kwazulu. Maybe Zimbabwe.
The many layers and shades appealed to me.
Specific Feedback
I am wondering if a more panoramic crop would be better. This is basically a full-frame 35mm.
Pieter, you’re right about the tones and layers, they are very attractive. The closest ridge seems overly dark to me. Reducing it’s darkness and contrast would help it fit the rest of the view better, or, as you suggest, cropping much of it to leave it as more of a silhouette will also work.

The layering and the light are quite nice in this view you captured. I also think the gradation of color in the sky is lovely. My thoughts pretty much echo those of @Mark_Seaver about the darkness of the FG ridge. I could also see a twofer in this scene as well. For me most of the visual interest is in the middle of the frame so I could see more of a vertical crop. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. This is just my opinion of course.
Thank you, Mark! I tried lightening up the dark are, and technically , it’s fine, there is a lot of detail there, but it turns out to be a distraction rather than an asset. Some very red sandstone rocks, for example.
I love Ed’s suggestion below. That creates the mage that is closest to my mind’s eye.
