Dreaming Cypress

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have been photographing this cypress tree for more then six years. So, when I learned how to get my camera to do multiple exposures, I knew I had to play with it on this tree. This is three frames combined in camera. This is kinda like an Orton effect in that there are parts that are sharp and parts that are out of focus. And it’s a little like a focus stack in that the leaves and tree are both in focus. The wind was blowing the leaves around between exposures.

Specific Feedback

Is this too busy? Are the foreground leaves too out of focus or just yellow blobs? Other thoughts are welcome.

An interesting contrast of the detail in the parts that didn’t move between frames and those that did, Patrick. A rather dreamy look at first glance, yet a lot of detail too. There are some very bright vertical streaks in the water and the background trees on the far right that tend to draw my eye there-a slight crop from that side would remove them nicely.

Well, I’ve been searching around this for a while and I can’t find a single yellow blob! A very cool idea, pulled off very well

Very cool Patrick. I like the dreamy effect and the color palette. It’s both warm and unsettling, which is an unusual combination.

I like the idea of a crop off the right, and in fact, centering the tree perfectly would feel more intentional and grounding counterpoint to the otherwise shifting sensations.

Not sure what aspect ratio that would be, but square could work, and there’s no need to avoid the edges in this kind of composition.
Nicely done!

It’s a very intriguing photo, Patrick. Well done.
