Early Dawn Yellowstone Elk

Original

Edited with Jagdeep’s suggestion of burning the foreground grasses

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was taken during the Fall elk rut in Grand Teton Nation Park a few weeks ago. I was hoping to find a location that enabled me to get a backlit image on a very cold morning where you could see the breath of the elk. The sun had just risen far enough over the hill tops to light up the foreground and a warm glow was hitting the breath of the elk.

Great subject, beautifully captured !
You managed to capture the breath effectively.
If this was mine, I would use a subtle vignette and darken the grasses.

What a sublime moment you caught here. The light is really something for all that texture. The huff of breath is the icing on the cake.

I’ll try that and repost in a couple days. Thanks Jagdeep. I appreciate it.

Hi Jagdeep,
I reposted with your suggestion to burn the foreground grasses. You were spot on. Much better I think. Thank you for the suggestion. I also brought the black point up just a smidgen.
