About This Image

Recently, there have been some demonstrations and “protests” in Portugal, as well as in Spain and—for different reasons—in France and Germany.

The population, especially young people, has been holding peaceful demonstrations to protest against high rent and housing prices. Just as in Spain—and in the case of Maricarmen—there have been so-called “campouts” where young people sleep in public places in the country’s two largest cities, and these have been gaining increasing support from the general public, parents, and citizens concerned about the rising cost of living.

Unfortunately, the government and security forces have failed to manage the situation, and there have been several nights when young people have been beaten with batons and removed from the encampments.

In the face of every fallen tree, and for every protester who has fallen and been arrested, I feel that a new society is growing to replace every fallen tree.

Wow. I didn’t realize a fallen tree had so many ramifications. I just like the image as it is. I like the overall color cast and the colors that comprise the image. The image has a spirit to it. From a compositional perspective I normally don’t like a strong horizontal that crosses entirely crosses a vertical image. But here it doesn’t bother me. I even find it attractive. I think that because the horizontal doesn’t create ‘two worlds’ - one above and one below the log. Or maybe it’s because there is so much continuity the reflections provide to the upper half that the log just lays over the real image. No, actually the log does bisect and fragment the image a bit. Ideally the log would reach part way across. The other issue are the bright lights in the llc.

Neither of these are really issues. They’re more opinions. To my knowledge I’m the only one that sees things this way as I’ve never read others bringing up the issue of strong horizontals in verticals.

I like this one, Joao. It’s a somewhat unusual composition but it works well.

Beautifully done, Joao. I like the composition and I think part of the reason it works so well is the branches coming off the fallen tree that break up the path it’s following a bit. The mood is very quiet and serene to me which is what fog and still water usually evoke in my psyche. I do find that the reflection of the yellow leaves in the lower left is a bit overpowering, especially since they’re not echoed in the above water portion of the image. Other than that minor point, I love this one.

Top notch. The rising mist really adds to the mood of this shot. The subdued color palette really works also. The only small nit I have is the reflected sky? in the lower left corner. Well done. No I don’t think the BG is too dark. It’s just right.

Igor, you bring up an interesting point that I never really considered. I’ll have to reflect on that.

I like this image very much. I like its mood and the feelings it gives. Also, perhaps the reason why the horizontal trunk is not breaking the composition is because it is doubled by the reflection… So it provides a sense of continuity. Perhaps. I agree the flowers are a touch too vivid, but that’s minor. Nicely seen and realized!
