Flying the Sidewinder

The Eastern Side of the Sierra has a flight path used by the USAF for low-level flight training. It is known as the Sidewinder.

So, how does that tie into nature photography. In the first video, the host talks about landscape photography in the area and gives several locations for great shots of the landscape. He also talks about equipment they use for getting shots of US military fighter jets flying low-level at 400 knots. The photography of these machines is stellar.

Sidewinder Part One

In the second video, the host takes us aboard with him in a USAF F-15 Eagle for a run thought the Sidewinder course.

Sidewinder Part Two

This is not the more familiar “Star Wars Canyon” location in Rainbow Canyon near Death Valley. It is a different course.

I was a jet aircraft maintenance tech in the USAF in the late 60’s early 70’s, so these videos brought back many memories. I am not posting these for any political reason. I simply thought they are very cool, and with some stunning photography. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

There’s an equivalent flight path in Mid Wales (UK) which possibly even more spectacular = known as the MACH loop
