Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Here is another image from our trip to Yosemite. This is one of first photos taken on the last morning in the park. I liked this little tree and its little peninsula of grass, with the light fog slightly obscuring the trees in the background. And the reflection was nearly perfect in the morning stillness.

Specific Feedback

Does this composition work? My post processing was mostly subtle, with a slight crop. Any suggestions regarding the processing? Of course all comments are welcome.

Steve, the little tree and it’s perfect reflection stand out in this nicely inviting, gentle view. I also like how the lumonsity of the surroundings changes across the frame. This would make great viewing anytime you need a mental break form the hubbub of life.

Very nice, Steve. I think the composition works well.

The bright area on the far left is distracting and tends to pull me out of the image. I suggest cropping it out.

Thank you @Mark_Seaver and @Don_Peters for your comments. Don, thanks for pointing pout the bright spots on the left. You are definitely right. I posted a revision with a slight crop to eliminate them.

Gorgeous Steve! So I repeat myself, but I’m so happy you got to have some beautiful light! You most certainly took advantage of it and no doubt you were sorry you had to leave!

This is just simply beautiful. The fog diffusing the light in the bg is just sublime; yet up front the reflection is crystal clear as you noted in the perfectly still water. The quiet and stillness is special with this.

Other than the eye magnets on the left edge that you’ve already address, no other nits or suggestions from me.

Yummy!

This is a very fine image. The light is gorgeous and you handled it very nicely. Although the crop eliminates the bright spots on the left, it feels a little tight to me. You might consider using cloning tools to fix these spots so that the original framing can be maintained. Either way, both images work very well.

Nicely done!

Steve,

Not much more to say than what the others already mentioned. I agree with @Preston_Birdwell about cloning the left edge rather than cropping. Perfect conditions for this subject. Without that fog, that little tree would have just blended into the BG and essentially vanished.

Hi Steve,
That’s what I call serendipity! You were definitely in the right place at the right time as that BG light and fog is so beautifully sublime and creates some nice separation between the trees in the FG and those in the BG.I do like clone suggestion from @Preston_Birdwell and @Youssef_Ismail as I too like that little bit of extra space. The processing looks great BTW.Beautifully done!

Thank you @Lon_Overacker, @Preston_Birdwell, @Youssef_Ismail and @Ed_Lowe for your nice comments. I should have thought of just cloning out the bright spots and the left edge rather than cropping it out and changing the balance. I’ve added another copy at the top. Thanks again!

Looking great Steve! Thanks for taking the time and consideration!

The second version with cloning works a treat, Steve!

The shots you got this morning are definitely some of my favorites that I have seen from you over the years, and this is again outstanding. Well seen and captured, the little trees look so beautiful reflected, and with such a beautiful background too. It all comes together magically.

One other option, if you don’t want to clone, is just to selectively drop how bright those areas are on the left edge:

Regardless, one of your best IMHO.

A very nice image. I like the greens of the small trees and the mist preventing the background from distracting, but still allowing an understanding of the environment

Such a beautiful image. I love the reflections and the fog. I really like the 2nd revision. Such a peaceful and relaxing composition. Well done!

Ditto on all the above comments, I love this image, I feel like I’m there, wrapped in silence and calm.
Thank you for sharing.

Thank you @John_Williams, @armin and @timothy3 for your kind comments.

I’m glad to see you post this one, Steve. I think it’s one of your best from the trip and the light was magical that Wednesday morning. I very much love those little trees in the water and their reflection as well as the background forest, particularly that lit up pine in the upper right corner. The left edge is a bit bright, but I love @John_Williams rework to simply burn it down so you don’t have to crop. Well done John. Tremendous depth to this image. Just beautiful.

Thanks Dave!
