About This Image

I’ve spent the last three evenings photographing the moon as it rose above the Absoroka Mountains. The first night it was clearly not quite full, so it was a mix of moon and sunset light on the mountains. The night before last, I was late getting home so I couldn’t photograph it until it was fully dark and the moon was cleanly above the mountains. It clearly had just a hint of the lower left corner missing. Last night I got to watch as it started to clear the mountains. This view was taken shortly after it had fully cleared the mountains. I was quite happy to see that this single cloud was showing some sunset color. A two shot pano showed most of the pink cloud and the moon. Both could be captured well with the same camera settings.

Feedback Requested

I like the overall darkness and the blueness as they capture the peaceful, calm, yet delightfull appearance of the visually full moon. (Technically, today is the actual full moon, but it needs nearly an hour to rise above the mountains, so getting a full moon at sunset means shooting a day (or even two days) before the true full moon. A third shot was needed to show the end of the pink cloud, but the cloud was getting quite diffuse, and there was nothing good in the land below.

Your image grabbed my attention with the lines from the amazing glimpse of the sunset off the clouds, the silhouetted ridge, all pointing at the moon. Those three elements work very well together and the panorama format is an excellent choice! The left side comes across cut off, like there might be something more to the left but that also adds a bit of wonder of what might be there. I think you’ve done well capturing the calm yet delightful mood! It is too easy to fall into the “normal” 2:3 aspect ratio, thank you for showing what can be done by visualizing outside the box so to speak.

Gorgeous and elegant!! The composition and aspect ratio are just right, colors soft but still powerful. The exposure on the moon feels just right, as is the detail. The mountains make a lovely horizon, with the distant peak making a very nice stopper at the edge of the frame, and pointing to the cloud. If I had one tiny nit, it would be that nobody would be the wiser if you brushed away the thicker part of the cloud exiting the frame – to match the way the right side fades away.

Lovely image, Mark. The moon can be so difficult to expose correctly, and this turned out perfectly exposed. The blue is so clear and the streak of color so fine, that the whole image feels like a slice of sunset/moonrise. I can see Diane’s suggestion of tapering that cloud, if it is without your practice to do such things. Part of me wants a teeny bit more land (like another 10 pixels of height), but I’m sure that would mess with the ratio and affect other things.

Nicely done,
ML

Hi Mark,

I am loving the peaceful mood you captured here as it looks like the perfect way to unwind and end the day. The combination of warm and cool tones work beautifully in this scene and I love the details in the rising moon. I am also enjoying the pano format as well as the diagonal created by the sloping ridgeline of the mountain. No suggestions from me as this is beautifully done!

Mark,

Outstanding moonrise image! The pano crop is perfect. I’m really enjoying the balance between the main elements - the mountain landscape, the sky/cloud and the moon. So simple and captured so beautifully.

I have no nits or suggestions. I think most of us have anticipated and watched those moonrise times near sunset as the moon becomes full… An hour per day, that’s all we ask…

Inspired vision and execution Mark

Lovely pano - everything just right

Love it!

Very nice image! The panoramic format you chose really suits this and I like how all of the elements - moon, cloud, distant peak, and the diagonal mountain “wedge” fit within it. The colour palette is also very nice and complementary.

Love your pano choice Mark!

Just a thought - a little more texture to the foreground ?
