Description
Uttakleiv, Lofoten, Norway.
Uttakleiv beach in Lofoten is a deservedly popular location in Norway for Northern Lights, but I was more interested in the golden light hitting these enormous rough stoned black boulders that turned to gold in the final moments before the sun disappeared against the impressive mountain backdrop that makes this place so recognisable. Very slippery though.

Hi Ian, Quite a lovely image you have shared of the warm northern latitude light caressing the boulder strewn shoreline. I love the detail of the foreground boulders and the natural gentle fall off of sharpness as they recede off towards the mountain in the distance. So many current photographers would have done a 17 bigillian shot focus stack letting one read the ingredients listing on the discarded candy wrapper on the mountain side. But sometimes the old ways just feel right. The composition is working nicely, the shutter speed hits a nice balance of milky while still offering some detail in the shallows in the foreground. Well seen and processed.
Oh, what gorgeous light! And golden color, too. The color on the boulders feels ok to me, but the really dark orange on that mid-ground slope on the left feels rather oversaturated, even if it really wasn’t.
That golden light! Such a beautiful scene, well composed and photographed in gorgeous light. My only minor critique is that the thin triangle of land jutting in from the right feels a touch to saturated to me, and possibly a bit bright. I wonder if reducing exposure by maybe 1/2 stop and ever so slightly reducing the saturation of just that bit of land might improve on an already stunning photograph?
Thank you everyone I tend to agree with Bonnie and Brett. I think you both might be right. Fuji Velvia film can go a bit nuts with sunlit colours. Its very good with overcast or softly lit landscapes. I suspect desaturating that wee strip of land at the back would be a good move. Michael, I think I had a 6 stop ND filter on that set up as well.
Wonderful, warm light in this composition, Ian. The foreground rocks are just beautifully side lit and long exposure created milky flat water. There is such a contrast with the snow capped mountain popping off against that really warm side lit hill. I can see how others find it a bit bright and maybe even a bit saturated and I’m wondering if it’s because of the very dark background. It does stand out and draw the eye and because of that I would probably tone down that warm spit of land jutting from the right edge but I can also see that as being what you really saw. This is wonderfully composed and well balanced. It’s very sharp in the foreground falling off nicely in the background. I can see why you took this image.
What a great image, the light is just magical and it gives this nice color contrast with the blue water and sky. The composition is very good, the row of stones lead you towards the mountain in the BG. I also like that you have used a rather long shutter speed to make the water smooth, not to compete for attention with the sunlit rocks. One idea could be tpo reduce the saturation of the strip of land in the upper right.
