About This Image

We were in Chyulu Hills in Kenya in October of last year enjoying seeing lots of interesting animals. We were hoping to see One Ton, one of the few remaining supertuskers in Africa (one or both tusks weighing at least 45kg each). He had not been seen for a few weeks but on our last day we were eating lunch when our guide rushed in and said he’d been spotted. After about 20 minutes bouncing up a rough African road we came upon him. He was very relaxed and mellow and very close. Too close unfortunately to give him much room in my photo but very cool to be so close and in his presence. I just learned that he passed away of natural causes on July 5th of this year. So blessed to have seen him and to see a supertusker in the wild. RIP One Ton.

Hi Timothy, Nice view of this behemoth! The black and white works well. Really shows off the texture on this big guy. Must have been quite the experience to see him up close. As you mention, framing is a bit tight but I think you imply you don’t have much more room to show.

Thanks Allen. Definitely a bit tight but he was so close I almost had to whip out the iPhone :winking_face_with_tongue:

Hi Timothy,
What a thrill to see this lovely animal up close. I was made aware of his passing from another photographer who also had the opportunity to photograph him.
The only suggestion I have is I would like to see more variation in color between One Ton and the background, he doesn’t stand out enough for me.
It’s one amazing photo!!

Hi @timothy3

Amazing animal

Mono often needs some contrast to make it dramatic.
On the day in the harsh sun it would have been difficult to get any contrast but here is a manipulation in Silver Effex

I just played around a little, darkened the shadows a bit more - only you can say if its better!

Best wishes

Huw

Thank you Alice.

Thank you Huw

Great specimen…such a beautiful tusker !

I do find framing to be tight and it looks more like grey & white instead of B&W.

Working in B&W is altogether a different story, you may spend some time and experiment..

J, thank you for your advice. The elephant was very close and it is difficult to give him more room. I’ll definitely play around with the black and white as it’s not something I do a lot.
