Recommendations for new Arca-type quick-release clamp for DSLR

I’m in the market for a new Arca-type quick-release clamp to fit my Manfrotto 496RC2 ballhead and would appreciate recommendations. There are just so many on the market that there must be some that are not the highest end that perform very well.

I’ve been using a ProMediaGear clamp for several years and have become frustrated with it over time as the screw seating has become messed up and the clamp is no longer able to seat securely. Hence, lots of play in the clamp even when all tightened down. Unacceptable.

Thanks for your help!

Not sure what you mean by clamp. Do you mean a quick release plate?

I’m calling it a clamp.

I hate to throw a wrench into the works, but my understanding is that…

  • The “Clamp” mounts to the tripod.
  • The “Plate” attaches to the camera.
  • The plate is installed into the clamp and then the clamp is tightened in order to hold the camera securely.

Be sure to buy real Arca plates and clamps. They are the best, albeit not inexpensive.
The one I have on my Manfroto tripods has worked great for 25 years.
