Soft Spring

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Birch’s are my favorite in the spring . This is a planted birch “forest”, very regular distances between each tree. My project was to catch the spring colors on the trees as well as on the ground.

Specific Feedback

Would like to know if you approve of the soft lighting

Technical Details

Tom, there’s a lot to like about this one. I can see why you’re fond of birches. I like the yellow of the background trees and the green on the ground.

I’m a little puzzled by the light. It’s soft overall, as you mention, but the trees are casting some pretty crisp shadows that seem a little at odds with the rest of the light.

Thanks Don. The idea was exactly that, ie having the trees and their shadows sharp and the background and colors soft - is that wrong, I mean is it disturbing the picture, would you have liked it all soft?

Tom, whether it’s wrong depends on your intent. As I was looking at the photo and my brain was processing what I was seeing, I sensed something anomalous. Soft skies don’t create hard shadows. If you were trying to create a journalistic replica of what you observed, the anomaly might be a problem. If you were trying to create a more impressionistic image, this may faithfully capture your impressions.

I forgot to mention that you may want to consider cropping some of the bottom of the image. The shadows are important to the image , obviously, but I’m not sure you need as much shadow as you have.
