The North American Nebula, NGC7000

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It’s a couple of months late for this object but another unprecedented streak of clear dark nights has me shooting something every night. This was last night. By dark, it’s farther west than desirable and I only got 3.9 hours on it before it got too low, but I was surprised at getting this much detail. Next summer I’ll get it again with a mosaic with the camera rotated 90 deg to get more of the Pelican on the right.

Technical Details

Astro rig, 640mm equivalent. Only PixInsight processing here – no cheating with PS!

Truly amazing what is up there in the sky at night, Diane. Thanks for sharing what I can not see. Totally enjoying your night skies.

Diane all your photos of the sky by night are excellent, I never tried. Do you use a telescope?

Thanks, @linda_mellor and @Giuseppe_Guadagno! Giuseppe, there are several different kinds of telescopes that basically break down into reflectors and refractors. I have a refractor, which is very similar to a 400mm telephoto lens but with the glass elements designed to give good stars. It is in the upper range of quality and actually cost less than a good 400 “daytime” lens. (Less expensive because of no autofocus or vibration damping.) I could use my Canon R5 and the 100-500 on the tracker, but I just wouldn’t get the same quality as with the dedicated astro stuff. I’m amazed what I can do from my yard, and now all the control (after hands-on polar alignment) is from inside with an iPad. The basic idea and the equipment is described in a tutorial on my web site – bottom right of the home page, www.dianedmiller.com.
