About This Image
This one is for you @John_Williams since you mentioned that you are the self ascribed color junkie. For this image I used a little more dehaze and a little more contrast than my last post as I wanted more of a vibrant fall mood. The autumn colors were gorgeous and appeared to be around peak; couple that with a bit of fog and you have some magical conditions for photography. This view is looking out over Blackwater Canyon. A lot of times I will shoot wider than I think I will need as it gives me some options for cropping later on as was the case here. I very much liked the three outcroppings of rock; almost as though they were looking out over the canyon. I find myself wondering; If only they could talk what would they say.

I am good with it, but does the oval shaped opening in the fog bother anyone? Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.

Hi @Ed_Lowe
It’s a lovely balanced image with gorgeous colours well rendered. The 3 watchmen are in a great position in the frame. There are a large number of other crops that would work. I like the mist but there is a great crop just on the rocks that I particularly like. Not better just different.
That’s a a great glorious tapestry of colors, Ed. Excellent composition with the patterns of 3s, ie the green trees on the ridge and the 3 outcroppings. Nothing to suggest any improvements. No, the oval doesn’t bother me, just adds some texture.
This is quite beautiful, @Ed_Lowe . I do think you could do some work on the clouds to fill in the oval you mentioned and make the entire URC more consistently cloudy. At least try it and see what you think. I like that the crop, though; the cloud section at the top balances the scene nicely.
In addition to the color, I love the diagonal created by the foreground and the background, and those three rocks really do add a lot. I didn’t notice the oval until pointed out, so I guess it doesn’t bug me.
This is a lovely scene. The colors are magical and the rock outcrops have a majestic profile as well. It’s impossible for me to know whether the oval break in the clouds would have caught my attention without your mention of it, but now that you mention it, yeah, it is a bit of a distraction. It would be easy enough to heal the hole with a bit of cloud (or a thinner area of cloud) from elsewhere in the scene, if that is within your practice. I have done that when a shape is too immediately geometric or when it looks like something specific (a face with eyes or dog profile, etc).
I wouldn’t mind a bit more space to the left too, if you have it, but I don’t know what was there. Of course, I’m being picky now.
The colors are indeed marvelous in this image. And those stone outcrops could make great images just on their own, if you could just get closer to them somehow. My only suggestion would be to not make the image 1/2 mist and 1/2 foliage. Whenever I see images like this I think of the film The Deer Hunter with De Niro scrambling around those peaks. As much as I like the foliage I would let the fog dominate.
A beautiful landscape, Ed. those “Sentinels” look like they could have come from Easter island. Being very ignorant of landscape techniques, I did wonder what it would look like with the barely visible patches of the next slope brought up just a touch, so I stuck it in LR, selected those areas and slid the Dehaze slider 5 points. It may not be at all what your vision was, so feel free to ignore it.
