Tri-colored Bumble?

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A couple of months ago I went to Ft. Simcoe State Historical Park (White Swan, Washington area) to see if there were bears to photograph. Occasionally they arrive to eat some of the fruit on the trees planted for food for the troops who were stationed there starting in about 1856. No bears but lots of bees, hornets, and wasps.

Specific Feedback

Any comments appreciated.

Wow, that’s quite a different looking bee, Jim. I have never seen one like it. It shows it’s markings well, so maybe someone on here can ID it. I wish you had a shot where we could see his face and eyes too, but I can’t be picky. I wouldn’t have wanted to get too close no knowing if it could/would sting you several times. Nice details in him and I like the nice oof BG that makes him and the branch stand out nicely. I also like the motion in the wings.

Jim, I think this is a Hunt bumblebee, one of several very colourful bees in Washington.
Nice catch here, of this pretty fellow!

Nice shot, looks fake! Thanks

Thank you.

Thank you. It was “busy as a (well, you know)” and wasn’t willing to stick around for me to get a better pose.

Thanks. When I first saw it I thought someone had created it.

“Someone” did!

I’ve never seen a bumblebee this color – wonderful, with a nice perch and just-right BG! I think you could crop quite a bit from the left an bottom to make him even more prominent in the frame.

If I’d seen him I would have wondered if he had been marked in some sort of study! (Or been in a paintball fight.)

A wonderful subject, so colorful too, that raised so much of interest.
I may crop off some canvas from the bottom & LHS.

Thank you.

Hi Jim! I am from eastern WA and have been to Ft. Simcoe several times myself! This year there is a mama with three cubs! I have two friends who got to see her and photograph them. I saw her, but not the babies this year. I did see a bobcat there, which was a newbie for me! I love this bee. When I was shooting hummingbirds in the Tri cities, I also saw some bees that had the orange on them as well…at first I thought I was seeing things. Fun image!
