I can only echo the great comments above Steve. Your conversion is spot on, and the revision nails the sweet spot. For someone with less black and white experience, you certainly had no struggles here.
I love the power and drama, and the fact that you took an icon and did something different.
After your images from this trip, I would normally say “drop the mike” and walk away. But, since we need to do many more in the future, I’ll just say keep it up!
I’m seeing both versions and definitely like the darkened areas best.
