The Harbor Master
This sculpture was placed in the open across the street from the ferry dock (Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry), and with a ferry at the dock I knew I wanted to include it in the BG.
I shot this with a 50/1.8 lens wide open to blur the BG enough to make the subject pop, but not so much as to make the setting unrecognizable. I needed to get as close as possible to the sculpture to provide the level of BG blur I wanted, and as stated in my previous post, not including the base of the sculpture was the only way to accomplish this in-camera.
There is a crop off the left side to remove some BG clutter (but retain the bonus bokeh balls), and a bit off the top to re-balance the composition. A 50/1.2 would have been perfect for this shot.
Feedback Requests
I consider this my best “Port Jefferson” shot out of all taken at the ice festival, mostly due to the BG and the “sense of place” it provides (anyone who uses the ferry service will instantly recognize the location). Feedback on any aspect of this image is appreciated!
