A Calm Reflection

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have recently decided to spend more time exploring and photographing around my local area after reading and listening to the words of several photographers. It’s not that the iconic places I can travel to aren’t on my radar, but that the “ordinary” places close to home can be so much more photographically rewarding. And they are places that can be re-visited over and over again, in different seasons, weather conditions and light. So I think I’ll be posting more of these local images now, starting with this one from the past week. This is a spot I have photographed before when the trees were in peak autumn foliage, only this time the leaves were gone. The structure of the bare trees and the perfect reflection were what attracted me to the scene. It was such a great moment of calm, and I thought it makes for a nice image.

Specific Feedback

Would you change the crop or the aspect ratio? Any thoughts as to the lone tree on the left side? Any other feedback would be most appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Ted,

The contrasting colors work well in this photo. It also has deep rich colors that I like very much. It does impart a very calm and quiet feeling. Excellent reflection also, seems a bit bright, as reflections are usually 1.2 to 1 stop darker, it might be in that range, or maybe not. That last splash of color in the bare trees is nice. As for the tree on the left, it does not bother me and in fact seems to act as a border that is mimicked by the lone tree on the right.

I don’t have a lot to add to what Youssef has already stated. I think this is a fine image, well composed and obviously lovely subject matter. The tree on left doesn’t bother me either. Thank you for sharing, Ted.

***I like the mood it’s very calming. The reflection is great . I would have liked to see the picture when the leaves were on the tree and in fall colors but overall love the photo

Thank you @Youssef_Ismail and @Bret_Edge for your comments. I appreciate you taking a look.

Wonderful composition here. The tree on the left doesn’t bother me at all.

I have two personal observations, however:

  • The forest behind the leafless trees is too dark. You might consider opening it up a bit. The reflection’s tonality would then be fine.

  • The bare trees appear to be quite blue as do the bushes in front of them. I think they could be warmed up some.

I really like the bare trees and how they contrast with the other vegetation. All in all, this is a nicely done image.

Thanks Michel. I appreciate your feedback. Here is a wider image of this same area of trees with their autumn foliage which I captured a couple of years ago.

This is really nice, Ted. I really like how the trees stand out against the dark BG almost as if they’ve been highlighted by sunlight. The LH tree doesn’t bother me as it’s balanced by the one on the right. I like your 4x3 crop but have posted a 5x4 for comparison withe the LH tree cropped. Also removed some blue as @Preston_Birdwell mentioned, but I’m a weirdo and like blue trees. Also straightened the waterline. I know you weren’t shooting straight across from you as can be seen in your autumn picture, but I feel it would be better to make it look level in this case.

Thank you Preston. I actually darkened the background trees to give more emphasis to the bare trees, but I might have taken too far as you indicated. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for taking a look and for your feedback Michael. It looks good with the 4x5 crop and the straightening.

Ted, this is a very striking photo. The bare trees and their near perfect reflection look great. I too noticed the touch of blue as a minor nit in a fine, restful view,

Very nice Ted! I like both your original crop (I too think the tree on the right balances the one on the left) and @Michael_Lowe’s crop. I love the other changes that Michael made as well.

Beautiful fall passing to winter image!
