A Few Images from The Painted Hills, Oregon

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It’s been over six months since I’ve done any landscape photography. It was nice to get a chance last week.

The Painted Hills, in Eastern Oregon are a true wonder. Such an otherworldly feel.

Over the years I’ve gone to longer and longer lenses in this place to isolate. I think I went too far, so this time I used the 100-400 to develop scenes with some context and sense of scale. I hope it works. Thanks for looking.

Specific Feedback

Any comments appreciated. The scene when you’re there looks rather flat and that’s what the camera records–a nice middle hump histogram. Back home and processing, a quick auto levels adjustment usually brings out the colors and contrast. Mostly, that is the only processing done to these images.

Technical Details

Nikon Z 8, Z 100-400, various focal lengths and shutter speeds, f/11 or f/16, and hand held. That was another first for me…handholding with the IS and high enough shutter speeds was very liberating, allowing a focus on composition.

We’ve missed you; great to see some new work from you.

This is a nice set David. The last time I was at Painted Hills I found myself mostly playing with similar compositions; I too like the context.

My favorite is that third one; it has such a nice flow across the image with such amazing textures from top to bottom. I don’t think you could ask for more layering in an image.

@John_Williams, thank you for the kind comments. Good to see you here in a moderator role. Congrats.

What a lovely collection, David! It’s funny, of all the images, my favorite one is the second one, which has the most muted color palette. My second favorite is the third image. All the diagonal lines and the beautiful colors hold my attention. I especially like the hints of blue throughout the hills, which is a nice little surprise among the other warmer tones. Great to see your work here!

Hi David,
Good to see some landscapes from you again. This is a lovely collection of images from the Painted Hills and I do not think you can go wrong with any of them. I am enjoying all of the bands of color and the way they compliment one another. You definitely put the 100-400 to good use in extracting these scenes. I particularly like # 3 and # 6. Very nicely done; no suggestions from me.

@Bret_Edge and @Ed_Lowe, thank you for the kind comments, I truly appreciate them.
