Acrobatic moves + RP

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Here’s another image of a panned gull, directly inspired by Jiri Hrebicek’s talk on this website. I love his illusionistic techniques and want to try them all.
I liked the color version well enough, but the black and white version turned it into something more abstract.

Specific Feedback

I’d appreciate any kind of feedback.

Technical Details

Fuji X-T5
Fuji XF 150-600 mm at 247 mm
1/8 sec; f/9; ISO 320
ND filter
Panning with the image stabilizer off, and AF-C + bird detection on

The black and white conversion works well, Canan, to enhance the abstract feel.

Thanks, Allen

A very cool abstract, Canan. I like the B&W conversion.

Thanks, Dennis

I’m enjoying this series as you unfold it for us, Canan. This is really cool, and I can see how you could put together a very interesting project of 10 or so images with a good bit of variety (placement in frame, posture of the gull, different kinds of shapes from the movement).

In this one, I’m seeing a bit of a halo around the gull. It might be a result of the white wings leaving ghostly impressions, but if it is from some brightening of the subject, toning that done or feathering it out would improve the image in my opinion.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Marylynne. I put the revised version at the bottom of my post. I’ve already processed 20+ pictures from my hour of shooting them, and I still have more to go. I loved panning the birds so much that I went back to the same place today. But there was not a gull in sight :frowning: I’ll have to keep going back. And I see that it’s possible to post projects here. I’ll figure it out & post some of the pictures once I’m done processing. Thanks for the nudge

I see the revised version is a color version or at least has a blue tint. I do like the high key approach in the original. FWIW, if you place your reposts at the top of your original post, the improved version shows up in the thumbnail on the critique page. That said, in this case, I would keep the original as it is better with that high key, black and white treatment.

OK, thank you very much for the critique and the RP tips. I added selenium toning to the revised version.
