Description

This taken on a recent sunset shoot below the Split Point Lighthouse at Aireys Inlet, VIC. Not great light and no cloud so finding a composition with some colour in it was a challenge.

General feedback on the subject, lighting and crop.

Mark, nice capture!

Good call on using the GND for the sky to deepen the color. I like the overall comp though I keep wishing there was a bit more on the right to see the entire pool. Perhaps a bit more sharpening on the upper half of the rock too, but quite fine as is!

Well the subject is sure a winner. I love all the variety in the tide pool and the “crag” it frames. I think the crop works well, but I do agree with @Jim_Erhardt about the right side. I don’t know what was going on in the portion out of the screen, but as is it feels cut of a smidge. I think the lighting is really nice too; it let’s the color sing.

I know it sacrifices a bit of the blue, but I really like a 4x5 crop with the top taken off too.

Thanks Jim & John.

I don’t have that shot with more space to the RHS but I do have another. Same set up but with a slightly faster shutter speed. I’ve attached the uncropped and cropped versions FYI, opening up the RHS.

The 2nd repost is your best image in my opinion. The vertical has far too much sky. The 1st repost is a bit too crowded. I guess it’s like the story of the porridge and the 3 bears story.

Both of the reposts are better IMHO. My favorite is the third.

Fantastic subject, Mark. The peek into the pool is mesmerizing, and the colour palette excellent, even without a vibrant sky.
I prefer the second edit.

Mark,

The third repost has my vote as well, except for the reflection of the rock in the pool. It seems minimized in the original post probably due to the the angle from which it was taken. A polarizer might have eliminated that reflection and allowed the contents of the pool to come through. But other than that, I think the third one is best.

Thanks Youssef.

A few weeks ago now but I’m sure I would have had a CPL fitted but probably dialled out for the landscape shot as its a 16mm. At <20mm the CPL causes dramas for me with shadows in the corners.
