Doug´s Bio

Doug is primarily influenced by and draws inspiration from Abstract Expressionist painters such as Hodgkin, Feiler, Rae, and Ryman. His gestural work eschews topography, aiming to distill the rhythm, rhyme, and flow of the landscape through poetic visual expressions.

With the camera as his principal medium, mirroring his painted mixed media abstracts, he attempts to create intuitive abstracted works which layer texture, color, and form to evoke a deeply emotional and expressive response to the natural and built environment.

Much of his time is devoted to teaching, especially through their online and app-based creative photography community at fyv.art - he has a passion for creative thinking and relishes encouraging students worldwide to discover their own unique artistic voice.

He has exhibited widely in the UK and overseas, being in demand as a public speaker, has taught at Photography Masters degree level at the Bradford College of Art, and his first book, ‘Abstract Mindedness,’ has now sold out.

When not making art, he derives great pleasure from making (rather poor) furniture and spending time with his wife, Beth, and their two exuberant dogs, Eddie and Lily.
