American Bison

Image(s)

Image Description

A herd of American bison trudges through snow as fog burns off on a winter morning in Yellowstone. In recent years bison have become a much more prominent target during my winter trips due in large part to the way they can be incorporated into some of this majestic (and often steamy) park scenery.

I really like this image. The fog acts to not just make the scene much simpler, but also to help frame the silhouettes of the nice straight line of 7 backlit bison. It also adds a slight sense of mystery and some depth to the image. The snow, of course, also helps simplify the subject and make them stand out even more. Finally, the lines in the snow in front of the bison help to frame them and help to make them the clear star of the image. This is an awesome image with incredible composition, IMHO.

A great image Max, you have controlled the light and the fog really well.
The Bison set the scene and the scale.

For me, it’s a powerful image. Bison and sunbeams are strong motifs, and there are strong compositional lines, a horizontal line, and a line slanting upwards.

Max, this is a fun and striking YNP image. How nice to get the Bison lined up. The clarity of the lower part contrasts well with the crepuscular rays coming through the trees. The fact that the trees in the upper parts look “crooked” adds a delightful, what’s going on sense.

Wow! This one has it all. The rays, the fog, the snow, and the perfect line of bison. It is a truly majestic scene.
