It’s the time of year where I look back at my year in photography, and this week I’ll be publishing my “Not Quite Best” images (before I get to my favorites in a couple weeks). This one is part of the runners-up bunch, but I figured it fits the category here.
Bison, once again, were a big inspiration during my January Yellowstone tours. I’ve really had fun photographing them, particularly in the park interior, the last several years. It’s expanded my enjoyment of black and white image-making especially.
There are a couple different shots that worked out in this sequence. I prefer this one due to the billowing steamy exhales.
This is an amazing picture. I love how the lead bison is in clear focus and the rest seems to be clouded out with snow. It makes it look like the leading bison is leading this group in a very difficult treacherous path with sheer determination and resolve.
