About This Image
When butterflies are photographed at rest, their wings often look serenely smooth. It makes a pretty picture, but it’s not real.
Photographing butterflies in flight tells the honest story. If you catch the bug in the right light, you’ll see its wings are covered with wrinkles and veins. A butterfly’s wing is a very thin double membrane reinforced by hollow veins. When the butterfly is in flight, the wing bends and twists and is loaded by moving air. You can see the veins themselves and also the ripples between the veins.
This Sleepy Orange shows it perfectly.
