Backlit on the Blacktail

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an early morning view of a grove of Aspens high up on the Blacktail Plateau in Yellowstone. Yellowstone’s Aspens are still recovering from being badly overgrazed by Elk in the 1990s, with good displays of color only in a few places with mostly young trees like those shown here.

Specific Feedback

The backlit glow against the shaded mountain lets this grove stand out.

Mark,

this is a very nice shot. I particularly like the subtle cool blue of the shadows as a backdrop to the stunning warmth of the aspens.

This would have stopped me cold. What a great scene and I really like the sense of wildness you found. It’s an organized photo, but it doesn’t look typical or overly choreographed. The mix of deciduous and coniferous trees is pleasing and I really like the way the light works through or is blocked by both. My only issue is the URC with the light hitting the tops of those trees - I keep looking up there instead of the bright yellow. When I shoot tamaracks, I sometimes have similar problems and I’m not sure if moving around in the field would have fixed it or introduced something else. Magical tools in Ps and other apps can deal with this in various ways if you had a mind.

Kris, those lit evergreens help tell the viewer where the light is coming from.

Mark - a great scene here. The bright yellows against the dark BG is terrific. That little group in the URC adds a lot of interest, and - as you said - shows the direction of the light.
