Birds in Flight

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Two birds flew past while I had the camera set for some ICM shots I wanted for a project. I took a shot of them without giving it much thought.

Specific Feedback

Is it interesting? Do you see any curable problems?

Adding contrast occurred to me but I didn’t like the results when I tried it, except that I added some midtone contrast with a luminosity mask and that worked.

Technical Details

ISO 100, 108mm, f/32, 1/4 sec. Infrared camera.

Another Wow! This is gorgeous and the reflection of the birds is the cherry on top of the icing. The whole thing works for me, with an interesting sky, horizon line, water and cloud shadows providing a dreamscape for the birds! 11/10!

Thanks, Diane. Sometimes we just get lucky.

I like this Don. There might be a slight improvement if the birds were on the left side of the frame, but it’s a very minor issue for this kind of shot. I like the way you handled the tones-it works beautifully and i couldn’t see much more contrast working at all.

Thanks for the comments, Dennis.

I love this. It’s very interesting.

I bet the colour version of this is otherworldly.

Thanks, Glennie. This was taken with an infrared camera with a black and white filter so there really isn’t a color version.

Should have read the technical details more closely.

Thanks for sharing this image, Don. There is an interesting dynamic between the area with the birds and the negative space to the left.

Glennie, I rarely read the technical details, so I don’t know why anyone else should.

Leo, thanks.

Nice Image Don. I would maybe take the burn tool and darken the birds a little. Great movement and Black and White does work well…

Don, this is really exceptional. I think adding any contrast would remove the “ghostly” appearance of the bird “apparitions” and greatly weaken the image. The muted horizon and clouds are perfect here.

Gill, Sandy, thanks to both of you.
