Description
Artistically, I see plenty of improvements I could wish for in this frame. But it tells a bit of a story from my favorite wildlife encounter during this year’s Brazil tour.
These black-tailed marmosets aren’t easy to find due to their small size, and during this year’s visit to this spot in the northern Pantanal, my guide had already warned me that they had not been seen. But our eagle-eyed driver spotted a small troop during our evening game drive. Though challenging—they were initially backlit as the sun set, and then settled in partially in sunlight (against a gray sky!)—I got my best views of this species… with a nice surprise. They had a tiny baby that was probably just a few days old.
We did our best to get clear views of the little one, and this was probably the best frame in that regard. But what the picture also shows is this species’ unique family structure. There are a few small primates out there that split family duties: Dad carries the babies around after they’re born, while Mom primarily handles feeding. Here, the baby has been riding on the male’s back, and the female has just arrived to take the tyke off his hands. Eventually the wee one transferred over to its mother, and they went off to nurse. Very cool to see this cute interaction!
