I rarely shoot flies but on this occasion I was still learning the nuances of my new macro lens and this fellow was pretty cooperative and approachable so why not? I’m still amazed and pleased with the level of sharpness, detail and ease of use I get with this lens. >=))>

This is almost full frame but would a tighter crop making the subject larger in the frame work better? How about the two tone BG?

Hi Bill. Flies like this one are best looked at closely. Otherwise, the viewer will never see the structural details present. The lens has pretty good sharpness and I like the soft-edged shadow. I have mixed feelings about the two-toned BG. Sometimes we just have to take what nature gives us. However, I think that it is fine as presented. You might try to increase midtone contrast slightly as my only suggestion. The fly has wonderful detail and makes a great subject for close-up photography. Well done…Jim
Yes, Bill, flies are definitely a humble subject, but as @Jim_Zablotny say, they show lots of interesting detail when viewed up close. I like that you’ve got some iridescence in it’s wing and back. I’m fine with the background, it seems quite natural. I think your positioning in the frame and the flie’s size look good. It’s nice that you can see the light shadows cast by the wings.
