This is an impressive image Armin, for me, the low perspective and the framing with the massive horn dominating the top left present this powerful animal very well.
Yes the muted colour pallet against the black background does allow the viewer to concentrate on the subject. It’s a really good picture of an often neglected safari staple.
Very nice image Armin. I agree with Ryan in that I like the low perspective and framing. It appears that the water buffalo was lite with artificial light. As a result, the light on the face is a bit too harsh to me. Maybe isolate and decrease the exposure and highlights on the face a bit? Especially the light on the right horn when facing the photograph. I would keep the life on the eye… it’s nice and sharp.
Armin, I like the choice to go tight here. While we usually start by capturing the full animal at these hides, I think it’s a good idea to play with close-ups and sometimes even extreme close-ups to try and find an abstract view. In this case, I’d recommend going only slightly tighter, mainly cropping from the top, in order to remove that top curve of the horns. The odd gap that’s remaining between the horn and the top of the frame leaves a awkward distracting line, so I think it would clean things up considerably.
Light and exposure look fine to me, as the eye draws our focus quite well this way.
