Cole Thompson - Why Black and White?

Watch the Replay

We are very excited to launch a new online webinar series! We will be bringing in many prolific photographers to give presentations to NPN members. Think of this as a presentation you would see at your camera club, but online.

The webinar is only available to paying NPN members, but you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to watch the presentation (no credit card required). If you are viewing this in an email, click the Visit Topic button at the bottom of the email to register. Spots are limited, so register right away!

Our first guest is one of the premiere black and white photographers of our time. Cole Thompson has a stunning portfolio of unique, creative work. You will not want to miss this.

Why Black and White?

Mar 30, 2020 01:00 PM Mountain Time

In 75 minutes Cole will attempt to convert the most diehard color photographers to black and white. He will be showing images from each of his portfolios, interspersed with his photographic philosophies, including:

  • Why you shouldn’t listen to other’s advice.
  • Photographic Celibacy.
  • Capture Vs Creating
  • Ansel’s Already done Ansel
  • Simplify
  • Equipment is not nearly as important as you think
  • Don’t compare your work to others
  • What photographic rules you should follow
  • To create great images you must go to great locations…
  • Cole’s Rule of Thirds

And most importantly (even more important than black and white), he will be discussing what he believes is the most essential ingredient to a great image: your Vision.

Excellent, your first image is very compelling…Jim

I heartily recommend this presentation to all photographers. After having Cole present at an early Moab Photography Sympsoium, I had to have him back again. I rarely do that. His presentation is thought provoking. Photographic Celibacy, I don’t agree, but the idea is worth listening to. Yay Cole!

I am looking forward to hearing your presentation Cole. Especially given that fact you were to join us here at PSNZ in New Zealand next month. :disappointed: Keep safe - we are in lock down for four weeks trying to beat this virus. But lots of time for learning and more photography. :slightly_smiling_face:

Once registered how does one connect to the webinar?

Hi Tim, five minutes prior to the webinar starting the Registered button will turn into a Join button, just click that!

Will this presentation be recorded? I don’t think I’ll be able to attend in real time

i tried to listen to the webinar; i joined it but no sound and no screen. will this be recorded so it can be watched later?

@David_Kingham: This is incredibly frustrating. The content sounds wonderful, but there is no image from Cole’s screen-pure black. Is this going to be available later?

Tried watching the webinar but just get silence and a black screen. Will this be recorded for replay?

I am registered and have repeatedly tried to get onto the webinar, but it does not work for me. I get a screen with a green frame, but no video and no sound. Will this be available to view later?

@David_Kingham: Was able to see images after someone suggested refreshing. The program was outstanding and inspirational. Thank you for providing this opportunity. Look forward to more like it.

@David_Kingham, I thought this was an outstanding presentation by Cole Thompson. Obviously there were some glitches, given the first time out, but the bits I caught made me want and hope you can work something out with Cole for some sort of re-make. Thank you very much for putting this together and offering it to NPN members for free. This was an incredibly kind offer.

Hello everyone,

If you attended the webinar I thank you for your patience with the technical difficulties. We did our best to prepare for this with practice runs, and we used the best webinar software out there, but still ran into problems unfortunately.

Cole is a saint and will be working to re-record his presentation and get a clean copy to us in the coming days. I will send this out to everyone so you can see his inspring talk the way it was meant to be seen.
