It’s all about Luminosity & Contrast

In 2017 Alister Benn had an epiphany, not surprisingly it was in a desert, the Gobi Desert. With nothing but sand for thousands of square miles and being days from the nearest road, there was a realization that there were no classic compositions in view. Everything before him was sand; textures, layers, transitions. It was in that moment that he realized that everything before him was just luminosity and contrast, but instead of a restriction, it brought about a freedom that has sustained him ever since.

In this webinar, Alister will introduce the concepts using black and white images, many of which were taken in the Gobi Desert.

Bio

Alister Benn was born and raised in Scotland and coming from an outdoor family grew up with a profound interest and respect for the natural world and the environments around him. He also writes regular articles in Landscape Photography Magazine and on landscape Magazine and has a solid reputation as both a technician photographer and a deep thinker.

Hi Dave,

I think you meant 12 p.m. EDT, not EST, right?

Richard

Yes, you are correct Richard, it’s EDT. Also, I screwed up the UTC time, it’s actually 4:00 PM UTC. Having trouble with time zones this week!

Really looking forward to giving this presentation and I hope it will open some windows to a different way of not just processing images, but actually seeing and engaging with the world around us.

See you there folks.

Hi @David_Kingham, unfortunately, I was only able to catch the tail end of the webinar. Just the small amount of the presentation I was able to watch was fantastic! I noticed it was being recorded. Can you please let me know if the recording will be made available for later viewing?

@Alister_Benn Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us!

Cheers!

Please explain the best you can the difference between luminosity, brightness, and contrast?

Thank you Alister and David for creating this terrific webinar. So much information. . .and so much for me to learn. Priceless, thanks again.

I am watching it now. No offense but I’m hearing adjectives like clarity and texture at 21:05 at about 21:10 it was said that is “webinar is for understanding the difference between luminosity, contrast and transitions between the zones”.
I went to https://www.xrite.com/service-support/define_the_difference_between_luminance_and_brightness and basically it says luminosity is objectively measurable but
“Brightness is perceived and cannot be measured objectively (but scaled, e.g. in %).”
Huh? Went to http://www.crompton.com/wa3dsp/light/lumin.html for more info but it’s not there. Just thought Alister might have simpler explanation.

I just signed up for NPN and luckily my favorite You Tube photo presenter did a webinar a few days ago. Alister is a great photographer, teacher and thinker about how we can produce images with emotional impact. This presentation is one of his best. Looking forward deep diving into NPN’s treasures.
