I am trying to figure out how best to crop this. There is some wide angle distortion that I am looking to minimize as well, but need a good crop first.

Hello Amber,
Your Northern photographers get all the spectacular light! I took the liberty of doing a crop for you. I used a perspective crop in PS by just pulling in the two top corners until the grid matched the tilting foreground lines. Then I used a normal 3:2 crop factor to take off the dark part of the sky and some off of the right side to remove the reflected blue light on the water. What do you think?

Thank you - I really appreciate the input and ideas.
@Youssef_Ismail got a great result! Don’t crop first then try to correct distortion. Correct first and you will have a limited frame to work with, then decide on a crop.
You can also limit wide angle distortion by shooting a pano with a longer lens and stitching, but that would not work with a dancing aurora. If photojournalism isn’t a factor, you could composite a sky with a wide angle frame and a FG pano with a longer lens. That would give you more control over the FG exposure, too.

@Youssef_Ismail’s edit looks great Amber. That’s wonderful color, and the land below adds a lot (especially perspective).
