Crossing the River.

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

While I was watching a golden eagle cruising above the Yakima River these deer entered and crossed from a burned side to a green side. The young ones stayed right behind their moms until almost across when they decided to run for the food.

Specific Feedback

I wonder if the deer are really the subjects and not the moving water. Does it belong in weekly challenge? I darkened them a bit, but wonder if they should be darker. It was early morning direct sunlight.

Technical Details

Canon 7D MKII; 1/1250th; 8.0; 500 ISO; spot; -1/3rd; 100/400 @286; handheld.

Jim, I’m with you in thinking that this is about the deer crossing, with the moving water a secondary element. It is a good, somewhat minimalist wildlife “scape”, that would be even more minimalist if you cloned out the bit of brush above the deer. I’m also interested in seeing that mom is collared, so somebody is learning about how the deer react after the fire, even though that was not likely their primary goal. Folks, including myself, routinely “push” the interpretation of the WC…
