WEARY WARY COYOTE.

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

While checking for something to photograph above the Yakima River, I noticed some commotion across the river. A coyote was crossing the river with some ducks following about 30 feet behind. By the time I was able to get to a place to get photos it was more than 1/2 way across. There were also a pair of hawks occasionally diving at it. Sounds like a great opportunity to get some unique shots, however, the ones I got of the hawks and ducks were not very good. I had to work a bit to get this one which is not as good as I’d like.

Specific Feedback

Anything. Head was dark so had to attempt to lighten it. Not sure if done very well.

Technical Details

canon 7DMKII; 100/400 @400; cloudy; 7.1; 500 ISO; spot; -1/3rd; 1/1250th. Some sharpening.

Jim, I think this is a neat look. The golden glow in its angled wake and the nice curve are real eye catchers. The big blue canvas of the river makes for a fine minimalist look. I’m inclined to think that you’ve overly dodged its head relative to its body. Its my opinion that the abstract nature of this view is its strongest point, so I’d suggest matching the head and body brightness with the golden wake (or maybe a bit less…)

Mark, Thanks. I can see that something isn’t quite like I’d like it to be. Your critique is very helpful.

I like the minimalism of this image. The pattern, texture, and golden glow of the wake is wonderful, as is the way it angles into the UR corner and points to the coyote. I do agree with Mark that the head is a bit too bright and stands out too much. Nice story and something you sure don’t see everyday.

Chris, Thank you.

Jim, I like this a lot. Despite the distance, you got a clear shot at the coyote, he is looking at you, there’s a bit of reflection, and the trailing asymmetric sunlit waves are great.
Really cool!
