Damp Chicken-of-the woods

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Even as our mid-Atlantic area is said to be having a drought, our house has been hit by every scattered shower in the last couple of weeks. The rain has mushrooms of many shapes and sizes popping out throughout the woods. This is a Chicken of the Woods and it’s growing from the same dead tree where I found one two years ago (but not last year, when we were quite dry). Early in the morning, there are lots of drops of water?? hanging from the underside of its shelves.

Specific Feedback

Getting low enough to let the hanging drops play a major in the view was the main challenge, but a secondary challenge was making sure that no rays of sunlight hit the mushroom while I was shooting.

Technical Details

R5, 180mm macro, 0.4 s, f/10, iso 800, tripod. A 50 shot stack to get lots of drops sharp.

Wonderful! I really had no idea what it was just from looking. Almost looks like food  You did an amazing job capturing the detail, especially the droplets and textures. Very eye-catching image.

LOL - from the thumbnail, it looked like honey-glazed roasted chicken that maybe got left out in the rain after a picnic. Maybe I’m just hungry…

Really unusual and interesting image - fine detail and perfect drops. I imagine it was difficult to get a good perspective here, but you did just that-
nice work!

You got really nice colors in this one Mark. Those fungi get really bright when they’re fresh. I love the water droplets. It is interesting how round they are in this image. Sticking with the food angle on this, this does look a lot like good lasagna. I also understand that fresh Chicken of the Woods are quite edible if cooked. People need to be careful not to get the look alike type of fungi that grow on pine trees though as they are toxic. As long as they grow on hardwoods, an they are fresh, they should be alright to cook and eat. Cool photo. WARNING - There are old mushroom hunters and there are bold mushroom hunters. There are no old, bold mushroom hunters. . .

This is lovely, Mark. Those drops of water are just superb and the “chicken” has such marvelous colors. The stack worked beautifully.

Gorgeous, with fantastic lighting and stacking!! Definitely looks like an illustration from a cookbook!

Mark: Really good reward in this image for your efforts at positioning and processing. Fascinating subject superbly rendered. >=))>

Mark, I don’t think I ever heard of or seen these before. Really nice find and capture. I can imagine you had to work to get the right position. It is a fascinating subject and as @Bill_Fach said, superbly rendered.
