New snow and dawn light in contrast made the mountains and clouds glow, setting off perfectly the gilded dome of the statehouse. Montpelier, with a mere 8000 souls, is the smallest of state capitals and the only one where the statehouse backdrop is a forest. There is just one spot in town where this view can be had and, fortunately, it is not too challenging to get to.
