Gulls are such great birds to shoot with new equipment. The way they soar provides a fairly easy following experience and you can concentrate more on the gear. It’s obvious from these that the eye AF works great. Two very impressive images with no nits from me.
I think you did good!! Both have wonderful detail on the head, great DOF and wonderful poses. I love the foggy BG – perfect for gull colors. I love the crops, too – no nits! Congrats on the new camera!
Very nice looking gull shots. I like the head turn and the eye looks tack sharp. Looks like Canon’s loss in Nikon’s gain. Always fun to try out new gear, but why the switch?
These are excellent images, especially with a converter. The head, eye, and beak detail is especially good. Looks as if you got the eye-tracking set up perfectly!
Congrats on a fine new camera - enjoy!
Hi Dennis, Diane, Allen, Sandy & David
Thank you for the comments. I looked at a head to head comparison between the Canon 200-800mm and the Nikon 180-600mm with a 1.4ext and the Nikon was sharper and handled whites better. The Nikon lens give me the full zoom range 180-600mm with a 1.4ext installed. The Z8 also has a faster sensor readout speed (approximately 3.7ms vs R5 Mii around 6.3ms). The one thing I did loose was a Raw pre-read. The Z8 was also on sale $600.00 of the list price. Now, I just have to convert my brain from Canon to Nikon.

Hi Peter, nice images! I like the pose of the gull with the head turn towards us. Looks kind of dreamy against the gray background. Sweet.
I hope you enjoy your new gear.
You presented some good test images. Now you know that the standard test subject for new camera equipment is the house cat (LOL). I switched from Pentax to Nikon and never looked back. I like legacy lenses and they work flawlessly with the ftz adapter. The used lens market offers some gems at affordable prices too. The 180-400mm f4 is one of my favorites. I do like the color profiles and render very realuistic colors. Keep the pictures coming and enjoy your new gear…Jim
Hi Jim
Thank you for the comments. That 180-400mm f4 & internal 1.4ext, is a cool lens. Most of my photographs land in the range of 400-700mm, with 70% at 700mm and a 40% crop. The used market is interesting. I need to replace my Canon 25-105mm F4.
Peter
Hi Jim
I am ordering the used 24-120mm f4 & the f to z adapter. I called Nikon and they stated the optics are very close between the new z mount and the older f mount. Thank you for the information.
