Death Valley View

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Aguereberry Point, Late Afternoon. I saw the lines leading to Bad Water Basin and had to take it, knowing the Road to get here would be closed the next Day. I did my best with Editing (which I dislike to do) since I was pointing into the sun. I will go back and retake during Sunrise and see if the light is similar.

Specific Feedback

I love the colors and the view. I just think I could have done better in the field or post-processing. But not sure what.

Technical Details

Taken with Canon R6 MII, Canon 16-35mm F2.8 L III USM:
ISO 200
1/25th of Second
F22
16mm
Processed with Luminar Neo

Hi @James_Shoemaker, You have certainly made quite a lovely image despite conditions. The textures and colors of the mountainsides are quite awesome. The bands of different colored ranges work really well. The sky is certainly over cooked in the URC, in the field that could be brought more under control with a Graduated Neutral density filter or through bracketed exposures using HDR techniques. Good luck with conditions when you get back there!

Hi James,
This is certainly a grand view. You had some tough shooting conditions with the light and it turned out pretty well with the exception of that URC with the blown highlights. I think @guy gave you some excellent ideas on how to alleviate that in the future. Good luck with your sunrise shoot. I hope it works out for you.

This is a fine composition and it accomplishes exactly what you wanted it to do. The landscape is perfectly post-processed but the sky does feel over-processed, primarily in the extreme highlights where it appears you tried to reign in the overexposure. There are a couple of things you can try on your next visit. 1) Use a 3 stop graduated ND filter (old school) or 2) Shoot multiple frames at three exposures, one for shadow, one for highlight and one in the middle, then blend them together using HDR software or by doing an exposure blend in Photoshop. This is definitely a scene worthy of the effort.

I love the view, the warm colours, and the image is just full of wonderful texture. Also, the sidelight on those rocks, especially the ones on the right side is very nice. As others have already mentioned, the funky sky in the top right is the only weakness in the image but all in all, I like this.

Thanks for this grand view of the Death Valley. Now I can admire this famous place that I have never seen and that I will never see in the future. A photo taken and processed very well. The sky is the only flaw do you think that it’s possible to delete most of it with a panorama format?

What a view!!! I’ve never seen this particular view before and I love the Textures, colors and the light in the foreground. Is this opposite side of Bad water Basin from Dante’s View? The blown out sky sky has already been addressed and you’ve been given some good pointers for your next trip on how to deal with high dynamic range. I suppose you could try and clone some of the clouds into the burnt out area but it wouldn’t be ideal for sure. This is a stunning view and everything in the landscape is just about right. Gorgeous light.
