Falls

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was trying to capture the motion and power of these falls. The scene changes constantly and the shot you compose isn’t the one you’ll get, but I took quite a few shots to deal with that uncertainty.

There wasn’t much color in the scene. What little color there was seemed distracting. So I wound up with black and white.

Fascinating amount of energy going on here! Lots of shapes to follow with enough rock to ground it. B/W works well – it’s all about shapes. I’m surprised at the amount of blur at 1/400 sec. Did you try a range of SSs? I’d bet this one would look great over a very large range.

Thanks for the comment, Diane. No, I didn’t experiment with shutter speeds. I just set the exposure and started taking photos.

Great subject! I like what you did, and the choice for B&W is a good one, but I go with Diane that I’d like to see the result of different SS’s. To me, this isn’t a subject for a long SS, no soft milky stream, but the power of the fall is so strong that I wonder what it would look like if the water is frozen with a really short SS.
Must have been a joy to play with this water.

Han, thank you for the comment. Just being there was a joy.

I said I didn’t try other shutter speeds but I forgot that I did take a few at 1/25th of a second. I like this one but I prefer my initial shot.

Foe me, this last one is special!! I love the fine vertical lines superimposed on the low-frequency tonal detail of the structure of the falls. It has a very different look than what we usually see with longer-exposure waterfalls, due to the mix of smaller droplets falling straight down. I think you have captured something unusual and very pleasing here!!

Thanks, Diane. It’s a subtler effect than the first photo.
