Fire Sunset

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is a sunset in New Mexico taken from a supermarket parking lot.
It was a very orange sunset with low storm clouds coming down from the mountains.

Specific Feedback

I think the orange is too under-exposed

A very interesting scene! I think the orange works. The whole image has an appropriate feeling of a dark exposure, but the orange didn’t go too saturated and the reds give it a nice transition to the clouds. I like the clouds being bluish.

The blush of magenta in the clouds is lovely. I’m a little undecided about the top half, wondering about lower contrast for the lights and the dark top edge. Hard to know without seeing it.

But I’m always curious, when I take time to comment, not only what the creator’s reaction is but that reactions do others have, too. This place is such a unique community and I’m feeling like there should be a lot more creative dialog. Artistic skill and vision are honed in bits and pieces.

Steve, this does have a real ground fire/smoke cloud look to it, especially the thumbnail. I think the darkest clouds above and the spreading center column really add to that perception. I love the little bits of color scattered through the lower clouds. I would remove the tiny cloud along the left margin about halfway up, and it looks like there are just a few dust bunnies near the long thin cloud in the center left, only noticeable with the largest version. I really like the ominous drama of this image.
