About This Image

Had to get out and catch the first snow of the season. Trying to capture the change into winter.

Feedback Requested

Thank you in advance for all the feedback. I’ve really appreciated all the comments and help with my other photos. I’m still working on composition and technique for these grand fall color scenes. Any advice is useful. Thanks!

Steve: One has to love scenes and conditions like this. The nice strip of aspens reveals that this is not a pure winter image and all the better for it. top notch shot. >=))>

This is quite a lovely scene. Very fitting for the weekly challenge, Well composed. The yellows and greens are beautiful to look at. The only small nit I have is the sky. I often fall into the same trap myself, in not realizing how much brighter the overcast sky is than the landscape below. I don’t know how much leeway you have in your raw file, but it might be possible to use a linear gradient to bring out some detail or texture. I tried on your jpeg, but wasn’t successful.

Yes! This is heavy cloud cover, nothing but white. I did try backing it off a bit with a linear gradient but didn’t like the result. Thank you!

Green, yellow, white: it fits the challenge perfectly, Steve. I like the white-out sky.

I quite like this! The colourless sky works very nicely with the colour of the forest and the overall composition is very pleasing.

Steve, definitely a fine look at fall changing to winter. The swaths of color look good with the snow on the mountains and the low hanging clouds adding a good touch of drama. My one thought about the sky is that a modest burning-in would have it match the luminosity of the rest of the land a bit better (or you could brighten the land slightly…)

Regarding Revision 1:

Really enjoy the juxtaposition of the 3 seasons represented here. I do prefer the revision #1 to the original post. Although I find myself longing to see the left side (as viewed) of the mountain, the part covered by the fog. All in all it’s a beautiful image that represents the challenge subject quite well. Good job!

Hi Steve,

This is a wonderful look at the changing of the seasons with the autumn color of the aspens nestled below the snow covered peaks above and of course the low hanging clouds provide some lovely mood and atmospherics. I like your revision, but I would be curious to see those clouds just a touch lighter; something in between the two versions; as it looks just a little to grey. Just my opinion of course. This had to be wonderful to view first hand.

Regarding Revision 1:

I find this very captivating. I prefer the original white sky to the sort of fog-colored edited sky. The line of aspens is wonderful. If anything I’d bring them out just a tiny bit more.

Beautiful shot, Steve! The line of yellow trees in the midst of the pines and rocky mountain is lovely, and then the clouds add that feel of winter. I really like the revision with the radial gradient.

Lovely! Holly
