Flame Skimmer on Patrol.

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The Flame Skimmer is a common dragonfly in the Southwest. You can find them on a perch, but it’s more entertaining to watch them patrolling the edge of a pond. These demented little rockets are super hard to capture with a camera, but occasionally it works.

Just No Words. Just amazing you caught this guy in Flight. What was your noise reduction … ISO 3200 at 1/2500 .. UN Real… WOW !!!

Russ; Terrific capture. We have a few of these around here but they’re relatively rare. To get on in flight is wonderful. Top notch shot. >=))>

Excellent, Russ. Really good detail in the skimmer, particularly for a flight shot.

Hi Gill

The performance of modern sensors surprises me, too. Not long ago, ISOs of more than 200 were thought to be unwise.

A nice in flight capture, Russ. I still haven’t accomplished that. We are just starting to get dragonflies here in my yard. Some years we have an abundance of them. Maybe so this year and I will get that shot.

Holy cow!! These guys are darts and don’t hover – I can’t imagine capturing one in flight! Super!
