The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
Early morning out with my wife and I spotted this in a small pond. I liked the elements and wanted capture the feeling of floating. The clouds made me feel like it could be floating in the sky as much as in the pond.
Specific Feedback
Does this image invoke a feeling in you? Is it too busy or does it still give the minimalist feel?
Technically I used a slower shutter speed hoping to smooth out the water a bit and I’ll be honest I didn’t notice the F stop went up to f22.

Hi Greg. This certainly does look like it’s suspended in midair. I love the tonality of the background. I don’t know if you have enough dynamic range, but I could see bringing out just a hint of detail in the log and its reflection. As far as composition goes, to me this feels like it could use a bit more room on the left. If you don’t have it and don’t want to add canvas, cropping the other three sides slightly would create an illusion of adding canvas.
Ominous! The log is so dark, and with that pointy end it feels ominous to me. Perhaps bringing up the shadows in the log a bit as Dennis suggested. It’s definitely not too busy.
Greg, I like how ominous the dark log looks (might even be a smoothed rock as presented and it definitely appears to be floating). I do think that depending on how you present this it could be seen differently. 1) crop to 4x5 or square leaving off the much of the bottom (cloudless area), for me that emphasizes the inviting colors in the clouds and somewhat reduces the “what’s going on” feeling. 2) crop off the top layers of clouds, which I think makes it even more ominous, as in “what’s this dark massive thing doing lurking in the sky?”.
Hi Greg, yes there is something about the main element and its relationship with space that captures my attention. This is a wonderful study in negative space and form. The darker tones of the rock/log and its shape anchor the image and it does appear to be floating. I agree with the others regarding trying various crops and horitzonal orientations. Good work seeing the potential in this scene.
I did have a horizontal shot, but there was a branch in the upper right. I usually don’t remove stuff but tried it here. I guess I could crop a bit more off the bottom.
Hi Greg. I don’t see a need to crop more off the bottom. The floating title seems best supported by placing the log and its reflection in the vertical center.
