About This Image

Our cactus mini-garden is a constant source of subject matter and so I extracted this little scene from it a couple days ago. >=))>

This is a bit of a test image. Taken with my new I Phone 18 ProMax in RAW utilizing the aperture selection. I’m pretty impressed with the image quality, so much so that I’m considering using it as my main back up camera on an upcoming trip to Yosemite. If it works well enough I may be able to upgrade my main body by selling off all my old stuff that is basically collecting dust but that I haven’t parted with since I’m not comfortable with only one competent camera when I go on a major tour. Your experiences with phone cameras will be most appreciated. Although it’s only anecdotal the new phone seems to be significantly better than my 16 ProMax.

Wow Bill, that is a great image! I love how it makes me see the cactus in a way. You have a great eye! That is so interesting that you took this with your new iPhone. Please keep us up to date as you use it more. I love the idea of using it as a second body.

Bill, What a great opportunity to experiment and have some fun that you can do anytime! The title says it all, what works for me is the different elevations of the various cacti and the largest one being the main subject off center and standing tall. Super cool image!

Funny, I just upgraded from a 15 Pro to an 18 Pro yesterday! I need to familiarize myself about all the changes in 3 generations but even with the 15 Pro, I find I use my phone more and more and am super impressed with the image quality before any processing, almost Velvia’ish look. I just have to remember to clean the lenses each time. :-/

Very nice image - colours and composition work really well
You might force the contrast and saturation a bit to see if the image pops (I may have taken it too far) , but I also like it as it is very much

Bill, the details here show very well…OUCH! The dynamic range looks good as well.

What a wonderful jumble!! I wouldn’t have guessed it was an iPhone. But no matter how good they are, for me they’ll never replace a real camera for most real-world lighting. The higher the contrast the more the limitations show. I don’t know anything about the 18 but my 16 Pro doesn’t come close to meeting my standards, and the raw adjustments are about 10% of what I have with a real camera. But if it’s the only thing available, it’s better than nothing.
