Gull Portrait

Reworked version with full frame height and a smaller crop off the right side;

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A common bird indeed, but this handsome fellow struck up a pose that warranted an impromptu portrait.

Taken through an open car window on a dock on Great South Bay, Long Island. This is a minor crop of the full frame to enhance the composition.

Beautiful job on the whites, Jim. I’m tending to favor slightly looser crops these days, so personally I’d prefer a touch more room on the top and right. Other than that, very good.

I like the pose and the detail Is great as is the handling of the whites. The eye is sharp and really stands out. I like the background. Maybe a bit more room on top. I noticed your camera, which once again proves my thesis that it’s the photographer and not the gear that makes for a good image. Nice one, Jim.

Thanks, reworked version above!

Excellent pose, perch, detail and processing, and yes, both the camera and lens are worth noting! I like the rework – it leaves just a bit more room for him to straighten up and look around.

Excellent detail, Jim - a fine look at this guy/gal!
Whites are perfect, and a nice pose and head-turn.

Thanks to all for the feedback!

Hi Jim
You have elevated this lonely Gull to a much higher stander. I would go with first post.
Peter
Ps
extra points of using a EOS 10D, its’ not the camera its’ the photographer behind the camera.

Thank-you Peter! The 10D was my first DSLR and while it wasn’t not a mega-MP camera, I have always appreciated its color rendering.
