Hi, Dean thanks for posting. You are correct! Generally, with Hymenopteran insects, the wings are prone to hot spots. Depending on the angle it can completely spoil the image. In this case, I would naturally opt for my large flash diffuser and block the natural light. There is little you can do in these situations except select subjects that are less likely not to give you this problem. You could change your camera angle a little, coming more side-on and by doing so the wings become more of a knife edge. You are more obliquely which is showing a larger area of the wing surfaces. Moving more to the right it’s quite possible that you would have been able to avoid it. I would also have a tighter crop and the red would be not just as overpowering in the frame.
