Harrier

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an old one from the National Bison Range in Montana (now returned to and run by the local tribes it had been stolen from) in 2022 that I ran across looking for something else. While the harrier was quite small in the frame, it looked like it was worth playing with.

Specific Feedback

I chose to leave quite a bit of room for the Harrier to move around in as for me part of this image was the wide expanse of the slopes in the Bison Range. Too small in the frame?

Technical Details

Sony A1, FE 200-600 + 1.4 TC @ 840 mm, hand held from truck, f/9, 1/1250, iso 3200. Preprocessed in DxO PureRaw 5, Processed in LR & PS CC. Reduced exposure a bit in LR and pulled down the highlights to avoid blowing out the rump patch. A couple of distracting teasel heads removed in PS, cropped to 5512x3856, a microcontrast boost to the bird. Taken June 6th 2022.

I like this one. Dennis. I do think it would benefit from a crop,

Nice image Dennis. I like the in flight pose showing the topside of both wings and the spread tail. I like the crop and also the position of the bird in the frame. Interesting to me to see the different layers in the environment here.

Hi Dennis
I like the small Harrier. I wish the Bison Range was more in focus. Good story.
Peter

I like t he composition/crop, Dennis. The harrier stands out nicely against the grasses. I think some bird images, such as this one, are more than just about the bird. For those not familiar with harriers, this image tells a nice story of its typical environment and flying pattern.
